Your metabolism

Your metabolic rate is an important factor in a successful weight management plan. Knowing your metabolic rate enables a professionally-tailored eating plan to be developed to help you reach and maintain your target weight.

Managing your weight successfully requires balancing the kilojoules you eat with the kilojoules you burn. The kilojoules you eat can be tracked, but what about the kilojoules you burn? This is where your metabolism – or your metabolic rate – comes into play.

What is metabolism?
Metabolism refers to the amount of energy required to carry out all the normal processes continuously occurring within the body, such as your heart and lung function. These processes require energy from food, and the amount of kilojoules (kJ) your body burns is what determines your metabolic rate.

What is Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR)?
Your RMR refers to the amount of kilojoules you burn up at rest i.e. when you are not doing any activity. RMR varies widely from person to person and amazingly accounts for as much as 75 per cent of the total kilojoules you burn every day. Having your RMR tested means our dietitians will be able to accurately predict how many kilojoules you need in a day to either maintain, gain or lose weight, and provide you with a personalised meal plan to help you achieve this.
