Apples
New season apples are hitting the shelves, and there’s a variety to suit every taste and occasion.
Apples are full of fibre and contain a long list of phytonutrients that function as antioxidants for optimal health and wellbeing. Studies have even linked apple consumption with reduced risk of some cancers, heart disease, asthma and diabetes. |
To take full advantage of the antioxidants in apples, it's important to include the skins. And if you aren’t a fan of citrus fruits, eat an apple instead – they still contain 23% of your daily vitamin C needs!
Tasty apple tricks:
-
Apple tastes great with pork – try an easy apple salsa of diced apple and pear, chilli, mint, a pinch of sugar and some lemon juice and serve with pork fillets
- Add apple juice to rolled oats and honey and refrigerate overnight, then in the morning add grated apple, chopped nuts and dried fruit and milk for a delicious Bircher muesli
- Top warmed canned pie apples in an oven proof dish with a mixture of natural muesli, a teaspoon of canola oil and some apple juice. Sprinkle with brown sugar and place under the grill on medium heat to lightly heat the filling and brown the topping
